The first thing you will want to do is determine where in your yard the best place for the pond is. Most home owners want to place their pond in the back unused corner of the yard. This is not always the best place for your pond. You want the pond to be up close to the house where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of your new pond from both the outside and the inside of your house. Once you have chosen the right spot, take a garden hose or rope and lay out the outer edge of your pond. You can make it whatever shape you want. Just try to avoid tight curves. Larger more gradual curves look more natural anyway. Once you have the shape that you like, use a tape measure and measure the greatest distance across the width and the length of your pond. If you are going to have the waterfall right at the edge of the pond be sure to add two (2) feet to the measurement that corresponds to the dimension where the waterfall will be situated to account for the watefall. If you plan on having a stream, then measure the length and width of the stream as you will have to order a separate piece of liner. The stream liner will need 1-2 feet of overlap on the pond liner and 2 feet extra for the waterfall. Below you can order the size pond kit that best fits the size of pond you have planned. Always order larger rather than smaller. Below are imporant calculations. Volume of water in pond Gallons = length * width * avg depth (2 ft) * 7.5 Amount of rock Boulders (12"-24") in tons length (of pond) * width (of pond) / 65 Gravel (3/8" - 4") in tons tons of boulders * .3 Boulders in the stream 3/4 ton per 10 ft of stream length Gravel in the stream 1/2 ton per 10 ft of stream length Example for an 11' x 16' pond: Boulders (11 * 16) / 65 = 2.7 or 3 tons of boulders Gravel 3 * .3 = 0.9 or 1ton of gravel Amount and types of plants for your pond: Oxygenators: 1 bunch per 3 sq ft of surface area Floating plants: 50%-60% of the surface should be covered by floating leaves, this includes water lilies Marginal plants: As many as you want to make it look natural *For plants talk to your local garden center. They will know what your are looking for and can help you. How many fish should/can I get? 1 inch of goldfish per 1 sq ft of surface area 1 inch of Koi per 2 sq ft of surface area * Don't forget to take into account that the fish will grow. Use their adult size as a guide. Too many fish can harm your ecosystem as well as too few. This is just a guideline. |
